Substitute Teachers' Appreciation Week

Each year, the Alberta Teachers’ Association designates one week as Substitute Teachers’ Appreciation Week. In 2007/08, Substitute Teachers’ Appreciation week takes place March 10 to 14, 2008. Schools are encouraged to organize events during this week that recognize the contributions of substitute teachers.

Our Substitute Teachers' Committee has developed a list of the "Top 10" things that you could do to show your appreciation for Substitutes during Substitute Teachers' Appreciation Week March 10-14, 2008.

10. Make room for the substitute teacher’s lunch in the staff refrigerator.

9. Provide a large Tim Horton’s Iced cap and a box of Timbits.

8. Provide a key to the classroom, even if it is attached to a 20 lb. tracking device.

7. Offer a sympathetic shoulder to whine on.

6. Don’t call a substitute teacher if it’s pajama day.

5. Provide whiteboard markers that work.

4. Offer a two-day assignment.

3. Have on hand an endless supply of fudge in the staffroom.

2. Provide a completely compliant group of students who would not dare change their seating arrangement as soon as they saw a substitute teacher in the classroom

and the #1 thing you could do is…

1. Extend an invitation to the substitute teacher to have pizza lunch with the principal.
